HARARE, Zimbabwe – The trial has begun for Zimbabwe's top rights lawyer who faces charges of allegedly obstructing justice.
State prosecutors said Monday that Beatrice Mtetwa was "unruly" toward police officers in March when they searched the house of an official from Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai's party. He was accused of compiling information on top level corruption.
Mtetwa denies any wrongdoing, saying she asked for a search warrant from the police during the search.
The state in court alleged she shouted "at the top of her voice," and called the actions "unconstitutional, illegal and unlawful."
Defense attorney Harrison Nkomo said the charges are a ploy to "pin something" on Mtetwa who has represented several political opponents of long-time President Robert Mugabe in previous lawsuits.
The trial continues on Saturday.
