BANGKOK – Thailand's armed forces has taken center stage in the country's ongoing political drama, hosting a forum in which the leader of an opposition protest movement presented his demands for an immediate change of government.
The event broke no new ground, as protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban repeated his position that caretaker Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra must step down and an interim, non-elected government administer the country before any new polls are held. An election has been called for Feb. 2.
The Thai military has been known to intervene in times of political crisis, staging about a dozen coups since the country became a constitutional monarchy in 1932, and using threat of force for leverage.
