Tesla Motors has announced a $121,000 price tag for its Model S electric sedan in China and says it is a "big risk" because the company could charge a lot more.

The fledgling U.S. automaker said Thursday it will hold down its sticker price by adding only unavoidable taxes and shipping charges. That will add about $40,000 to the $81,000 sticker price in the United States.

The company says it wants to treat Chinese buyers "just as well as we'd treat customers in any other country." It says it is willing to take a "big risk" that customers might think its cars are lower quality than higher-priced competitors.
