Egyptian security officials say a suspected Islamic militant died when a homemade device he was handling went off inside a house in a village near Cairo.

They said Thursday's blast in Kirdasah injured another man.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

Thursday marks the anniversary of the military's ouster of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi. An opposition coalition led by Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood has called for mass protests, which are likely to draw a harsh response from security forces.

Since Morsi's ouster, security forces have killed hundreds of Islamists and jailed more than 20,000 people as part of a sweeping crackdown.
