Sudanese media is reporting that a man has opened fire outside of the presidential palace in the capital, Khartoum, prompting an exchange of fire that killed him.

The semi-official Sudan Media Center website said the unidentified man approached palace guards with a knife Saturday, stabbing one and snatching his weapon. The website says the man opened fire, injuring the same guard and another.

The center said other guards then opened fire on the man, killing him. There was no official comment from the presidency or the state-run SUNA news agency on the incident.

It was unclear if President Omar al-Bashir was at the palace at the time. Al-Bashir came to power in a 1989 coup. He announced last month he plans to run for office again next year.
