Police say two trains crashed in the Swiss town of Rafz, reportedly causing multiple injuries.

The Neue Zuercher Zeitung newspaper reported the subway train and high-speed train on its way from Zuerich to Stuttgart collided at 6:45 a.m.

Witnesses told Zurich daily 20 Minuten the train hit the subway carriages from behind.

It was not immediately clear how serious the accident was. Photographs from the scene showed train cars that had been knocked off the tracks, but not overturned.

Police spokeswoman Cornelia Schuoler told the NZZ said the accident in the town north of Zurich, near the German border, caused multiple injuries, but she did not say how serious they were.

Zurich canton police did not immediately pick up their telephones or answer an e-mail seeking more information.
