A Spanish man detained in Cuba has gone on trial in connection with a car crash that killed a prominent dissident and another anti-government activist in July.

Pro-government bloggers in the city where the trial is being held are reporting dissident writer Yoani Sanchez has been detained by authorities in Bayamo, about 500 miles (800 kilometers) east of Havana. Human rights monitor Elizardo Sanchez in Havana confirms the detention of Sanchez, her husband and a man who was driving them.

Spaniard Angel Carromero is charged with the equivalent of vehicular manslaughter in the July 22 crash in which dissidents Oswaldo Paya and Harold Cepero died.

Carromero arrived at a Bayamo courthouse Friday morning for his trial. He could face up to 10 years behind bars.
