A shootout at a bank in the northwestern Spanish city of Vigo has left a police officer and the lone suspect dead.

Authorities say the unnamed suspect was trying to rob a branch of the Abanca bank when police arrived.

The suspect shot two officers Friday while using a bank worker as a human shield.

A national police spokeswoman says the wounded officer returned fire, killing the suspect and wounding the worker.

The spokeswoman spoke on condition of anonymity because of department rules preventing her from being named.

Bank robberies in Spain by criminals using guns are rare, as are shootouts between authorities and suspects.
