JOHANNESBURG – South Africa's High Court is starting hearings on whether local television stations can broadcast live the trial of double-amputee Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius who is charged for shooting dead his girlfriend February 2013.
Prosecutors say they have no problem with certain parts of the blockbuster court case being televised but Pistorius' defense lawyers are strongly opposing the applications.
At least two TV stations have applied for permission to show live coverage of next month's trial. Their applications are being considered by a judge, who will have the final say over whether the high profile legal battle is aired live on TV and watched minute-by-minute by millions across the world.
The applications are being heard by the High Court in Pretoria beginning Wednesday.
