MOSCOW – The new chief of the Russian Election Commission has called off a vote for the local legislature in a Moscow suburb, responding to allegations of fraud.
Ella Pamfilova began the procedure Wednesday to abandon Sunday's vote in the village of Barvikha.
Four candidates who are associates of anti-corruption crusader Alexei Navalny announced Tuesday they were standing down in the face of what they described as electoral fraud during early voting. The candidates documented hundreds of people with recent voter registration who were bused to the village to vote.
The appointment last month of Pamfilova, a former presidential human rights ombudsman, was viewed as a sign of the Kremlin's willingness to clean up the elections.
The Barvikha vote is now likely to be set for July.
