The state news agency of Saudi Arabia is reporting that a gunman has shot and wounded a Danish citizen in the capital, Riyadh.

The official Saudi Press Agency, quoting an unnamed Saudi security official, says the shooting happened Saturday afternoon. The agency said the victim was in stable condition and that authorities were investigating. It did not elaborate.

As a precaution, the U.S. Embassy in Riyadh instructed its personnel to avoid the area where the shooting took place.

Al-Qaida attacks in Saudi Arabia a decade ago killed hundreds of people, including foreigners. No major terror attacks against foreigners have happened in recent years, though police say a Saudi-American dual national fired from a U.S. defense contractor shot two American ex-work colleagues in October, killing one and wounding the other.
