MILAN – Premier Matteo Renzi's government has adopted new anti-corruption measures in the wake of a scandal in Rome raising the specter of Mafia infiltration into the winning of public contracts.
Renzi's ministers passed the measures in Rome late Friday, including tougher penalties such as the restitution of all ill-gotten gains and a longer statute of limitations. The premier urged lawmakers to act quickly on the package and said he would seek a vote of confidence to ensure passage.
Under the measures, the minimum penalty for corruption convictions would be raised from four years to six years in prison, while the maximum penalty would go from eight years to 10.
Prosecutors in Rome have described the involvement of the 'ndrangheta mob into a well-oiled system to win public contracts in the capital.
