LONDON – Authorities in Britain are charging two people — including radical preacher Anjem Choudary — with inviting support for the Islamic State group through lectures that were published online.
The Crown Prosecution Service said Wednesday it was charging Choudary, 48, and Mohammed Mizanur Rahman, 32, for supporting Islamic State, which is a banned organization. The offenses are alleged to have occurred from June 29, 2014 until March 6 of this year.
Sue Hemming, head of special crime and counter-terrorism at the CPS, says each man is charged with one offense under the Terrorism Act 2000. They are set to appear later Wednesday at Westminster Magistrates Court.
Choudary is the former leader of a banned radical group called al-Muhajiroun.
