Puerto Rico's government has removed posters advertising a chewing gum after hundreds of people in the U.S. territory complained they were sexist.

Officials with the island's Department of Transportation and Public Works said Wednesday that they took down the Dentyne Ice posters placed at train stations in the capital of San Juan.

The poster shows a person sitting down and reads, "Don't give up your seat. Offer your lap...Ready for any opportunity."

At least 750 people had signed an online petition demanding the removal of the posters.

Officials with Dentyne Ice in Puerto Rico apologized in a statement and said it was never their intention to promote inappropriate behavior.
