Puerto Rican police say a bank executive was shot to death on a busy highway in the capital.

A police statement says Maurice J. Spagnoletti was driving home from work in his Lexus when he was hit repeatedly by gunfire. No suspects are in custody.

The shooting occurred Wednesday evening on one of the busiest roads in San Juan.

Spagnoletti had been executive vice president of mortgage and banking operations for Doral Bank since January. The 56-year-old father previously held bank executive posts in South Carolina, Indiana and Pennsylvania.

The El Nuevo Dia newspaper quoted an investigator as saying the slaying could be linked to an audit Spagnoletti was conducting at the bank. Doral criticized speculation about the motive in a statement Thursday.
