JAKARTA, Indonesia – He was arrested for allegedly receiving a $250,000 bribe, but that amount would appear to be small change for a disgraced Indonesian chief justice.
The graft commission says it has confiscated cash and assets worth $16,650,000 during an ongoing investigation into the former head of the constitutional court, Akil Mochtar. They include 33 cars, 31 motorcycles, land and house, commission spokesman Johan Budi said Wednesday.
Outgoing President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono had promised to tackle rampant corruption, but few think he has made any progress.
Budi said Mochtar would have to prove the assets were not bought with the proceeds of corruption.
Mochtar is accused of accepting bribes to fix the results of two local elections.
His lawyers were not immediately available.
