Poland's foreign minister says he wants to meet with the European Union representative in Warsaw to discuss "strange and unclear statements" by EU commissioners concerning changes in the nation's media law.

The law is part of sweeping reforms that the new conservative ruling party is speedily introducing to many state bodies. It gives the government control over state radio and TV.

Some EU leaders have expressed alarm, and the European Commission is to debate Poland's rule of law on Jan. 13.

Minister Witold Waszczykowski said Tuesday he wants to meet the EU representative in Warsaw about that, especially the call by Commissioner Guenther Oettinger, who wants Poland put under a special monitoring mechanism, and Frans Timmermans who has asked for an explanations of the changes.
