Israel police say that an Israeli soldier was stabbed in downtown Tel Aviv, and that they immediately arrested a Palestinian suspect.

Spokeswoman Luba Samri said the victim had been "gravely" wounded that the suspect is a resident of the area around the West Bank city of Nablus who was in Israel illegally.

Micky Rosenfeld, another police spokesman, said that all possibilities into the attacker's motive were being investigated, including whether it was related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Tensions between Israelis and Palestinians have been high in recent weeks, following last summer's war in the Gaza Strip and increasing frictions over a contested Jerusalem holy site.
