QUETTA, Pakistan – Pakistani police say militants have destroyed a historic house associated with the country's founder, shooting dead a guard there, in a southwestern hotbed of ethnic nationalist insurgency.
Senior police officer Asghar Ali Yousufzai said attackers on motorcycles planted bombs to destroy the 19th century residence in the mountain resort town of Ziarat in Baluchistan province where Muhammad Ali Jinnah lived before his death in 1948, a year after he led Pakistan to independence.
Yousufzai said the attackers also shot dead a police guard outside the Quaid-e-Azam residency, turned into a museum about Jinnah, early Saturday. He said three bombs exploded triggering a fire that destroyed the building.
The attack took place in Baluchistan province where Baluch nationalist groups demand greater rights and a share from gas and mineral revenues.
