Brazilian police say they are investigating the allegations of a Brazilian rock singer who says Rio de Janeiro's mayor punched him in the face.

Rio's police department said in a terse two-line statement Tuesday that musician Bernardo Botkay and his wife will be questioned about the Sunday night incident at a Japanese restaurant.

Mayor Eduardo Paes apologized in a statement for the "physical disagreement" that followed insults allegedly hurled at him by Botkay and his wife.

The statement does not describe the physical disagreement, but a press officer at City Hall says the mayor punched Botkay in the face. He declined to be identified because he is not authorized to comment the case.
