Some 100 police officers are searching for a man who stabbed five people in the space of an hour in broad daylight in the northeastern Spanish city of Lleida.

A regional police spokeswoman said the victims in the attacks Monday were a Chinese person, a Moroccan, a Pakistani, a Spaniard and a person from an unspecified South American country.

The aggressor left the knife stuck in the back of the last victim.

The officer said the perpetrator appeared to attack his victims at random without any apparent motive. She said police believe he may be a foreigner.

One of the five victims is in critical condition while the other four have serious wounds.

The officer spoke Tuesday on condition of anonymity in keeping with force regulations.
