Police in Guyana say they have found the bodies of two officers reported missing since Sunday in a remote southwest jungle.

Deputy Commissioner Seelall Persaud said Thursday that one officer was shot in the back and the other tied to a tree and set on fire. He said police are investigating reports that the officers were seeking bribes and gold from workers in illegal gold mining camps.

Persaud identified one victim as 34-year-old Marlon Letlow, who was found guilty two years ago of accepting a bribe as a government official. The other was identified as Leedon Aaron, who was recently posted to the mining region.

Police on Wednesday had found the officers' blood-spattered vehicle abandoned on a trail in the mountainous North Pakaraima district.
