Police have renewed a search for more victims in a bus accident in southern Brazil that has killed 49 people.

The government of Santa Catarina state says the victims include eight young children, three adolescents, 24 women and 14 men. The bus plunged 1,300 feet down a mountain near the city of Joinville. Ten people are being treated at nearby hospitals.

Officials said in a statement Sunday that the death toll could rise because more bodies could be found under the bus and in the woods.

The cause of the accident is under the investigation although authorities suspect the driver may have lost control on a curve.

The group was traveling from Uniao da Vitoria for a religious event near the coast in Parana state.
