Palestinians Set Cars Ablaze in East Jerusalem

JERUSALEM -- Israeli police say Palestinians have thrown stones at police and set cars on fire in east Jerusalem.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld says the clashes began early Thursday in the neighborhood of Silwan. He says the protesters were quickly dispersed. No injuries were reported.

It was not immediately clear what sparked the violence.

But tensions have been high in the neighborhood over a municipal plan that includes the slated demolition of Palestinian homes. Palestinians recently clashed with police forces and Israeli settlers there.

Israel captured and annexed east Jerusalem in the 1967 Mideast war. Israel considers the sector part of its capital. That claim is not recognized internationally.

The fate of east Jerusalem figures to play a central role in Israeli-Palestinian peace talks set to resume next week.
