Israeli police say they have shot a Palestinian couple after the woman attempted to stab security forces on the outskirts of Jerusalem.

Police said the pair approached security forces on Wednesday while the woman brandished a knife. Police say they opened fire after the couple ignored warnings to stop. The incident occurred at the Qalandia checkpoint, a main crossing point from the West Bank into Jerusalem. Details on the couple's condition were not immediately available.

The incident was the latest in a wave of violence that broke out last September. Since then, 28 Israelis and two Americans have been killed in stabbings and other attacks by Palestinian assailants. Nearly 200 Palestinians have also died, most of them said by Israel to have been attackers.
