ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE – A White House spokesman says President Barack Obama was kept informed in Chile about the crash of a U.S. fighter jet in Libya and the plight of its crew.
Deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes told reporters traveling with Obama to El Salvador that the chief executive was notified of the apparent accident by national security adviser Thomas Donilon, who had received a call from Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Reports Tuesday indicated the two pilots safely ejected, and military authorities said the cause of the crash of the F-15 jet was mechanical.
Rhodes also said Obama telephoned Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey to thank him for helping with the release of four New York Times reporters who had been detained in Libya.
