Violence motivated by an electoral dispute between indigenous communities in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has left at least eight people dead.

State authorities say the violence occurred near the town of Santiago Choapan, about six hours from the state capital.

A mayoral election is planned for five municipalities in the region. A December election was annulled after four of the five townships were not allowed to vote and disputed the results.

Authorities said in a statement Saturday that an unknown number of people were injured in the violence.

The municipalities are dominated by the Mixe indigenous group.
