LAGOS, Nigeria – A Nigerian human rights group says it is asking the International Criminal Court to investigate the killings of schoolchildren and teachers by suspected Islamic militants as crimes against humanity.
Sunday's statement comes a week after extremists attacked an agricultural college in northeast Nigeria and gunned down at least 43 students.
The Boko Haram terrorist network is accused of killing hundreds of civilians including schoolchildren sitting for examinations in stepped-up recent attacks that defy a massive military crackdown on their strongholds in northeast Nigeria.
The Socio-Economic and Rights Accountability Project says it sent a petition to the ICC on Friday saying it believes the school attacks "amount to crimes against humanity."
The court in The Hague said in August a preliminary investigation indicated Boko Haram has likely committed such crimes.
