A Nicaraguan official says police have deported an American man who was convicted of child pornography possession in the United States and fled before sentencing.

National Police official Glenda Zavala says Cory Michael Papp was sent back to the United States on Thursday.

Zavala says the 37-year-old was detained at a police checkpoint in Nicaragua's central province of Chontales because he was traveling with an expired passport. She says an Interpol notice had been issued for Papp's arrest.

According to the FBI, Papp pleaded guilty in 2009 to child pornography charges after police in Oregon found more than 2,000 images of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct in two computers he used at an Oregon State University library. They also found several CDs containing child pornography in his backpack.
