SAO PAULO – New testimony in the 2005 killing of American nun and Amazon rainforest activist Dorothy Stang may allow the men convicted with masterminding her killing to appeal their convictions.
A statement Thursday on the Para state court website says a federal police agent has told Judge Raimundo Moises Alves Flexa that ranchers Vitalmiro Moura and Regivaldo Galvao are innocent.
Galvao was sentenced to 30 years in jail but the Supreme Court earlier this year said he could remain free pending the outcome of his appeal. Moura is serving a 30-year jail term. Two other men charged with taking part in her killing are also in jail. Another one is at large.
The statement says that Moura's attorney hopes the new testimony could help overturn his client's conviction.
