Nepal police say a small plane with foreign tourists has crashed while attempting to land at a mountain airstrip in northern Nepal.

Police say the plane was trying to land at Jomsom located some 200 kilometers (125 miles) northwest of Katmandu on Thursday when it crashed on the banks of Kaligandaki river.

It was not clear if there were any casualties and the identity and nationalities of the passengers on board. The area is popular with foreign trekkers visiting the Mount Annapurna area and Hindu pilgrims visiting the revered Muktinath temple.
