YANGON, Myanmar – Myanmar's human rights body says two soldiers tried for the shooting death of a freelance journalist have been acquitted by a military court.
A statement released Friday by the government-sponsored Myanmar National Human rights commission said a military court in northeastern Myanmar acquitted two soldiers on trial for the killing of journalist Ko Par Gyi, alias Kyaw Naing. No details were given.
A lawyer for the journalist said the acquittal is not final until army chief approved the decision. His wife said she will file an objection.
Ko Par Gyi was killed in October after he was detained by the military while covering clashes between the army and ethnic Karen rebels. The military he was shot as he tried to escape.
