Morocco has summoned the Algerian ambassador in Rabat to vigorously condemn the shooting in the face of a Moroccan on the border near the city of Oujda.

The three government ministers at Saturday's news conference said Algerian forces fired on a group of Moroccans on the border, seriously injuring one man in the face.

Interior Minister Mohammed Hassad said the incident raised concern over Algeria's behavior on the border and could lead to more serious incidents.

"The intention was most likely to kill him," said Hassad, while pictures of the injured man with a bullet hole in his nose were passed out.

He added that calls to discuss common border procedures have been ignored.

The two countries have tense relations and the borders have been closed since 1994.
