Mexican police say they have captured the head of a drug gang that calls itself "The Resistance."

A statement from federal police says Torres Garcia was arrested in the city of Uruapan in Michoacan state.

It alleges that Garcia is the leader of "The Resistance," a coalition of traffickers from other cartels that banded together to fight an incursion by the Zetas drug gang.

The group operates in the western states of Michoacan, Jalisco and Mexico, as well as the nation's capital.

Two alleged associates of Torres Garcia were also detained Monday. Authorities seized drugs and several guns.
