Mali government says it will open an investigation into bodies discovered by AP in Timbuktu

The spokesman for the government of Mali said the country's chief prosecutor will launch an investigation into the killings of Arabs and Tuaregs whose bodies were found by an AP reporter.

Mahamane Baby said on Monday the case has not yet been opened, but added that the "prosecutor of the Republic will soon open a dossier on this matter."

Over six months, the AP identified the graves of six men, including three Arabs and two Tuaregs. All of them were last seen being arrested by Malian soldiers. One was found with a bullet next to his head. Others with their hands tied. An internal military report described to the AP but not made public accuses a unit of Malian soldiers of carrying out the reprisal killings.
