TRIPOLI, Libya – Protesters have broken up a session of Libya's parliament, disrupting a vote of confidence on a new Cabinet, demanding representation for their city.
The protesters, from the city of Zawiya, stormed the chamber, chanting slogans against recently elected Prime Minister Mustafa Abushagur. Lawmakers left the General National Congress floor, saying they would not vote under pressure, said GNC spokesman Omar Humidan.
The demonstration Thursday reflects the divisive makeup of Libya, where rival groups and tribes all demand government representation.
On Wednesday, Abushagur presented his Cabinet, made up mostly of technocrats from Libya's largest cities. It includes one woman.
The country's liberal alliance, led by former Prime Minister Mahmoud Jibril, is not represented. Talks between Abushagur and Jibril failed to achieve agreement.
