Lesotho's leaders to meet South African president over reports of coup attempt

JOHANNESBURG – A Lesotho official says the prime minister is in South Africa and will meet with the president of South Africa to discuss recent unrest in the mountainous kingdom.

Lesotho's Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohlabi Kenneth Tsekoa said that Prime Minister Thomas Thabane will meet on Sunday with President Jacob Zuma as well as Lesotho's Deputy Prime Minister and a third representative of the coalition government in South Africa's capital.

Gunfire hit Maseru, Lesotho's capital, Saturday and radio stations were jammed as the military disarmed two police stations. The prime minister says it was a coup attempt, but the Lesotho Defense Forces say they were merely trying to secure the country after learning that police were going to supply arms to a Monday demonstration.

Lesotho is surrounded by South Africa.
