LAGOS, Nigeria – Human rights lawyers say they are filing an urgent appeal to prevent Nigerian authorities from executing by firing squad a man sentenced under the former military dictatorship.
A statement Thursday says that it is unconstitutional to deny an appeal to the man sentenced for armed robbery by a military tribunal in 1995.
Thankgod Ebhos was dragged to the gallows Monday where he watched four death-row inmates hanged. But Ebhos was sentenced to be killed by firing squad and Edo state Attorney General Henry Idahagbon says prison officials were not equipped to shoot Ebhos. He says he does not know when Ebhos may be executed but speculates that officials are trying to find soldiers to carry out the shooting.
Monday's hangings ended a seven-year moratorium on the death penalty in Nigeria.
