The lawyer of an Australian-Israeli citizen who died in prison after an apparent career in Israel's spy agency says he met with his client the day before he committed suicide and that the man denied the allegations against him.

Avigdor Feldman told Israeli Channel 2 on Thursday that his client, Ben Zygier, was "rational" and that the two discussed legal options, including a plea bargain.

Feldman says Zygier denied the "serious crimes" he was suspected of.

The comments came a day after Israel acknowledged for the first time holding the Australia-born Israeli under a false name for security reasons and that he died in prison in 2010.

An ABC Australia report says Zygier was working for Mossad when he was put in a maximum-security prison for an unspecified crime.
