KUWAIT CITY – More than 2,000 protesters have demanded Kuwait's ruler to set a date for parliamentary elections under voting districts that appear to favor opposition forces, including Islamists.
The demonstration Monday outside the parliament building is the latest attempt to pressure Kuwait's emir to set an election date after the chamber was dissolved earlier this month.
An Associated Press journalist witnessed the protest, which was held under heavy security.
Opposition groups want to retain voting constituencies that gave Islamists and allies control of the 50-seat parliament in February elections.
Kuwait has the most politically active parliament among Gulf Arab states. Opposition lawmakers have openly accused officials of corruption and other alleged abuses.
