Jockey Brian Toomey was being treated in hospital on Friday after sustaining life-threatening head injuries during a fall at Perth racecourse.

Toomey was riding Solway Dandy in Thursday's 5.00pm Perth Festival Conditional Jockeys' Handicap Hurdle, in Scotland, when the horse fell heavily.

An air ambulance was soon on the scene but the rider was eventually taken to Dundee's Ninewells Hospital by road.

An NHS spokesman warned the injuries were "life-threatening".

Trainer Kevin Ryan tweeted: "Very concerned to hear the news about Brian Toomey this evening, thoughts with him."

Champion jockey AP McCoy also offered his "thoughts and prayers" to the jockey and his family.

"Let's hope he will be OK," he tweeted.
