PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad – Jamaica's public defender has delivered an interim report into a deadly 2010 raid by security forces to catch a gang boss that he says killed 76 civilians and one soldier.
Public Defender Earl Witter says his office is probing complaints that 44 of the 76 civilian deaths could have been unjustifiable homicides.
The bloodshed occurred in Tivoli Gardens during a May 2010 offensive by soldiers and police. The slum was the powerbase for fugitive gang boss Christopher "Dudus" Coke, who was wanted in the U.S.
Witter says his report may pose more questions than answers and is calling for a commission to be appointed to investigate further.
He has been widely criticized in Jamaica for taking so long to deliver his interim report, which was tabled in Parliament on Wednesday.
