MILAN – Prosecutors have requested trial for an Italian woman who traveled to Syria with her Albanian husband, a suspected extremist, to join the Islamic State group, as well as for family members who planned to join her.
Prosecutors said Monday they were seeking trial against Maria Giulia Sergio, who converted to Islam and took the name Fatima, and her Albanian husband, Serjola Kobuzi, as well as Sergio's parents and sister, who prosecutors say embraced Islam and had made preparations to join her.
Sergio and Kobuzi are believed to be in Syria and would therefore be tried in absentia. Sergio's family members were arrested in July.
The suspects face possible charges of association with the goal of terrorism and aiding terrorism. A preliminary hearing will determine if a trial will go ahead.
