JERUSALEM – Israel's president has issued an unusual televised statement to Jordanians to express "deep regret" over the shooting of a Jordanian judge.
Shimon Peres offered "deepest condolences" on behalf of Israel. The Monday statement was aimed at easing tensions over last week's shooting.
Israel's military says troops killed the judge after he tried to grab a rifle from a soldier at the border crossing between the West Bank and Jordan.
The death caused uproar in Jordan, triggering street protests and calls to annul the 1994 peace agreement with Israel. Jordan is one of just two Arab nations to make peace with Israel.
Israel has agreed to a Jordanian request for a joint investigation.
