Israel's Netanyahu says any accord with Palestinians will likely result in a "cold peace"

JERUSALEM – Israel's prime minister says any agreement with the Palestinians will likely initially result in a "cold peace."

Benjamin Netanyahu says given the forces of terrorism and radicalism emerging from Iran and elsewhere, Israel must have "iron-clad" security arrangements in place to protect any peace that may emerge from negotiations.

In a video address Sunday to the Brookings Institution in Washington, Netanyahu thanked the Obama administration for its intense mediation efforts. However, he insisted Israel must have all the tools to "protect itself, by itself" in case any accord with the Palestinians unravels.

Under heavy American pressure, the sides set an April target date for resolving their decades-long conflict. Negotiators have quietly been meeting, but neither side has shown optimism and talks have been characterized by mistrust and finger-pointing.
