JERUSALEM – Israel's Attorney General has announced it will indict a journalist who published classified documents provided by a military whistleblower.
The Justice Ministry said in a statement Wednesday that Uri Blau, a reporter for the Haaretz daily, will be charged for unauthorized possession of state secrets. The maximum sentence is seven years.
Blau's reports were based on hundreds of documents he got from Anat Kamm, who copied them during her military service when she was an aide to the military commander in charge of the West Bank. The documents included operational plans, militant targets and other secrets. Kamm was sentenced in 2011 to four years.
Head of the Israel Press Council, Judge Dalia Dorner, told Channel 1 TV the decision "harms press freedoms."
