JERUSALEM – Israel's Justice Ministry says it is probing claims that the head of a police unit investigating corruption received bribes from associates of a prominent rabbi.
The Justice Ministry said in a statement released Thursday that Israel's attorney general received information in recent weeks that officer Menashe Arbiv and his family received "benefits" from associates of Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, considered one of Israel's wealthiest rabbis. It did not elaborate.
Arbiv heads a police unit known as Israel's equivalent of the FBI. He recently served as the Israeli police representative in the U.S.
Rabbi Pinto is connected to a U.S. probe into Rep. Michael Grimm for possible campaign finance violations involving a Pinto associate. The rabbi's followers include politicians and celebrities.
Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld says Arbiv denies wrongdoing.
