Israeli police say a Jordanian national was shot and killed after he tried to stab officers in Jerusalem.

Spokeswoman Luba Samri says the man pulled out a knife and rushed at officers outside the Old City who opened fire Friday. Samri says he had a Jordanian and a Palestinian ID on his body.

It was the latest in a yearlong wave of Palestinian attacks on civilians and soldiers that killed 34 Israelis and 2 Americans. Some 211 Palestinians died in that time, Israel says the majority were attackers.

The attacks were a daily occurrence but have declined recently.

Israel blames the violence on a campaign of incitement by Palestinian political and religious leaders. Palestinians say it is rooted in decades of living under military rule and fading hopes for independence.
