ANKARA, Turkey – A foundation close to a U.S.-based Muslim cleric's movement has denied being behind a corruption probe targeting Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's allies.
Erdogan has rejected the corruption allegations as a conspiracy against his government and has pointed fingers at police and prosecutors he says are affiliated with the movement. His government was forced to dismiss three ministers whose sons were detained as part of the probe.
A statement from the non-profit group, The Writers' and Journalists' Association, said on Monday that the movement, led by U.S.-based cleric Fethullah Gulen, had no "enmity" toward the government and no links to prosecutors that initiated the probe.
The group is affiliated with the movement and often speaks for Gulen.
