International Court rejects request from Libyan government to cancel case against Gadhafi son

AMSTERDAM – Judges at the International Criminal Court have rejected a request from Libyan authorities to cancel the court's war crimes case against the son of Libya's slain dictator Moammar Gadhafi.

The decision Friday said that the charges Libya is seeking to try Seif al-Islam Gadhafi on are not the same ones the international court wants him for, and the new government in Libya is not able to enforce judicial powers over the whole country.

Gadhafi was captured in the aftermath of Libya's 2011 civil war by a militia group that has refused to hand him over to the central government in Tripoli.

Gadhafi, accused of crimes against humanity, says he is innocent of wrongdoing. His lawyers say he has asked to be tried at the court in the Hague, Netherlands.
